Drought
A
drought occurs when there has been no rainfall for months or years in area.
Rainfall happens when water vapor from the ocean rises and gathers into clouds.
The vapor becomes water droplets, and as these droplets become large and heavy,
they fall back to earth as rain. However, the water vapor may not rise high
enough into the atmosphere to cool because of the high air pressure, so it
doesn’t fall as rain. Another factor is that the rain-carrying wind is not
strong enough to reach the area, causing drought to occur there. On the other
hand, some areas have little rain and a long drought because mountain peaks
block the moist wind causing the rain to fall on the windward side of the
mountains. A severe drought may cause the death of wildlife, affect the
economy, and destroy social life in the area.
