Earthquake

An earthquake happens when two tectonic plates are crashing into or sliding past each other. The outer layer of earth is made up of many floating plates that are like jigsaw puzzle pieces with edges made up of many faults. The plates keep moving, when the jagged edges of faults are stuck together. While the rest of the plates are moving, the energy that would normally cause the plates to move is being stored up. As the jagged edges finally free themselves, all the stored up energy is released. The energy goes outward in all directions in the form of seismic waves like ripples on a pond. It is these seismic waves that shake earth when they move trough it, and while the waves reach the surface of earth, they shake the ground and anything on it.
